Mindfulness Monday: Kindness
Join Dr. Laura Smallwood as we discuss kindness. Specifically, how does 'kindness' differ from 'being nice'. We discuss how true kindness originates from love and interconnectivity, whereas being nice is based on transactional motivation, where we are hoping for a specific outcome based on our actions. As Dr. Laura states: "When my heart is oriented toward kindness, my thoughts and actions will be guided by that rather than the motivation to try to control the other person or the situation. This frees me from the need for things to turn out a certain way so I am less likely to experience disappointment and anger when they don’t. True kindness is psychologically healthier for us because it is its own reward—it is not outcome dependent."
Embracing true kindness instead of "niceness" helps us become better people, better professionals, and can improve our performance at work by reducing the shackles and increased bandwidth taken up by our expectations and the desire to control outcomes. And like other mindfulness-related skills, kindness can be practiced and cultivated through Loving Kindness meditation.

Ep. 031
Mindfulness Monday: Compassion
Join Dr. Laura Smallwood as we discuss compassion. Compassion starts with kindness, but also adds empathy, or as Dr. Laura states "I think of compassion as what happens when kindness meets up with a difficult or painful situation." We discuss how compassion starts with the recognition of suffering, and is as simple as a heartfelt desire for the person experiencing suffering to be free from that suffering. Compassion doesn't necessarily demand action, and sometimes our need to take action can make a situation worse. We also discuss how compassion fatigue is not actually possible, because compassion isn't a limited commodity, and we do not suffer from being too compassionate. In fact, studies have shown the opposite. This misunderstanding often arises when we carry transactional-based expectations based on how 'nice' we think we've been to others. And finally, we discuss how compassion directed at those who have done wrong can be healing for all involved, because we recognize that all harm arises from suffering. This was a truly special episode for us, as we hope it will be for you.

Mindfulness Monday: Mindful Speech
Are you ready to apply the principles of mindfulness in how we speak (or refrain from speaking) to others? Just in time to prepare for those touchy family holiday discussions, we invite you to listen as we discuss the principles of mindful speech with Dr. Laura Smallwood. Specifically, what guidelines can we follow in selecting for mindful speech, and how do we execute it? Guidelines include choosing words that are true, non-harming/kind, necessary and timely. Execution includes presence, curiosity and purpose. Effective and honest communication is the foundation of all relationships in life and work. You don't want to miss this episode!

Viruses, Fungi, and Nematodes, Oh my! Wait, it’s not just another bacterial UTI? Get out of the Kingdom Bacteria, and join Corinne and Dan as they entertain all the "zebras" that may cause cystitis in dogs and cats. We also include a brief discussion of organisms that more commonly cause glomerulonephritis rather than primary cystitis. This is a great review of a number of infectious organisms, their vectors, important aspects of life-cycle, traditional diagnostic and treatment options, with a series of slides to accompany the podcast containing tons of extra information. If you are prepping for your board exams, this podcast is a great refresher. Join us!

Ep. 034
Mindfulness Monday: Joy
Join us as we discuss the topic of Joy with Dr. Laura Smallwood. Joy, and specifically Sympathetic Joy, is the third of the four heart virtues and involves rejoicing in the happiness and good fortune of someone else. We discuss how true happiness is a skill that we can cultivate in ourselves, but why pursuit of happiness that is dependent on external circumstances is counterproductive. When we are able to cultivate true happiness, it becomes a superpower, and it is then much easier to engage in sympathetic joy. We can learn to take the time to fully enjoy what we find pleasurable and partner that enjoyment with gratitude. We can take the time to notice the little things with curiosity and wonder. We can practice contentment, share our joy with others, and share in the joy of others. Let's see if we can all spread more joy throughout this holiday season.

Ep. 035
Mindfulness Monday: Equanimity
Join us as we discuss Equanimity with Dr. Laura Smallwood. Equanimity is the final heart virtue and can be thought of as the ability to be with things as they are, or calm in the face of extremes whether they be good or bad. This is not a passive stance on life, but rather an active choice to engage with whatever the present moment brings, as opposed to passivity which is a form of avoidance. We discuss common hindrances to equanimity, as well as how to apply equanimity in the workplace.
